Data collection

Collection notes
(circumstances, sources, methods, funding, coverage…):
The coverage of male adult members of the Pardopa clan (and their wives) is assumed to be as good as exhaustive. However, neither female clan members, nor children are included. Wives' clan membership (and thus the Pardopa clan's alliances) is also not included. Finally, the Pardopa clan is one of many Samburu clans (the one in which the author lived and was initiated).

Description

Description: The Samburu dataset is the result of a census of Pardopa clan members (and their wives) undertaken by the author during two field trips, first in 1958, then again in 1973. This purely agnatic dataset documents both the segmentary and the age-set structure of the clan. The dataset is composed of the 1248 individuals documented by the author, distributed over 6 generations, as well as 15 apical individuals (marked differently) that have been added by the coders to allow for classificatory and segmentary connections indicated by the author.
Individual attributes include: gender, period of death, approximate age, age-set and sub-age-set membership (for males only), as well as descent group membership for 4 levels of segmentation (clan, sub-clan, hair-sharing group, lineage). For further details, see samburu_dataset_information.pdf (in French).
