Data collection

Collection notes
(circumstances, sources, methods, funding, coverage…):
This is the genealogical reconstruction from first hand French colonial sources that refuted the myth created by Swanton 1911 of a matrilineal "Honored class" and lead to the once-demographically famous "Natchez Paradox."
Reference: -
Bibliography: Pénicaut (see Margry 1876.1886) fullest early account. 1718 Le Page du Pratz (1758) historian and landowner the most complete account. 1720. Dumont (1753) mostly secondhand accounts from White Earth village. 1721. Father Charlevoix (Shea 1872) gave second hand early data but his historical material on the 1721-1731 period is excellent.

Description

Description: Natchez nobility (Sun rulers and nobles of matrilineal descent from Suns) married exogamously with commoners, whose genealogies were not recorded. A purely matrilineal genealogy, no marriages.
